The holy city of Varanasi skirts the ghats of the River Ganges. It is also known as Kashi and is one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Hindus. How to get there:
Trains the most viable option of getting into Benares. It is well connected from Delhi, Lucknow, Agra and other north Indian large cities.There are also bus services to major towns in UP ( and to the Nepal border). Varanasi also has an airport which has direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai.

Season:
October to April is the best time to visit to beat the heat and to catch the festive season in Varanasi. Bharat Milap and Diwali are in October while Hanuman Jayanti and Shivratri fall in Feb and March. All these festivals are celebrated with Zest.

2. One gets great thaalis in restaurants and extremely cheap too ( approx Rs 30)

5. The shopping hot-spots in Varanasi are Chowk, Gyan Vapi, Vishwanath Gali, Thatheri Bazar, Lahurabir, Godoulia or Dashswamedh Gali and Golghar.
6. One can explore the ghats on a boat. Sunrise and sunset will be beautiful. One can haggle with the boat men on the price as they are sure to charge exorbitant prices to tourists.

The city can safely explored according to its ghats along the Ganga. Apart from the temples, the ghats offer an exciting and colourful experience with the activities there. There are 5 main ghats in Varanasi -
1.Assi Ghat - this is the south most ghat and is said to be more peaceful than the others. It is said to be the place where Tulsidas wrote Ramcharitra Manas.
2.Dasawamedh Ghat - This is one of the oldest ghats and is still clean and untouched.
3.Harish Chandra Ghat - This is one of the 2 cremation ghats and is named after King Harishchandra who woked in the cremation grounds to understand truth and charity.
4.Manikarnika Ghat -Manikarnika Ghat is the main cremation Ghat of Varanasi. Manikarnika Ghat is one of the oldest and most sacred Ghats in Benaras. According to the Hindu mythology, being burned here provides an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and rebirths. It symbolizes both creation and destruction.
5. Tulsi Ghat -This is named after the great Hindu poet , Tulsidas. Tulsi Das composed the great Indian epic, Ramcharitmanas at Varanasi. According to mythology, when Tulsi's manuscript fell into the River Ganga it did not sink and kept floating instead

The festivals of Bharat Milap, Diwali, Hanuman Jayanti, Shivratri, Nag Nathaiya, Nakkatayya & Ram Lila are the most celebrated festivals in Varanasi. Try and plan your travel close to these to see the zest and vigour in the city.
Places of Interest from Varanasi:
1. Chandraprabha Sanctuary - It is about 55 kms and 2 hrs away from Varanasi. Avaidable as compared to the sites of the ghats. One usually remains focussed on a trip to Benares.
2.The Chunar fort is situated in the Vindhya Range at a distance of about 45 odd km from Varanasi.
3.Jaunpur - Jaunpur was a major center of Urdu and Sufi knowledge and culture. There are some monuments to see here.
4. Kaushambhi -In ancient times Kaushambi was an important seat of Buddhist learning and the remains of various monuments bear testimony to this fact.
5. Vindhyachal - It is believed that Goddess Durga had established herself here after having killed the demon king Mahishasura.
6. Sarnath - The buddhist seat of learning is about 8-10 kms from Benares. A must to see the famous stupas.
7. Ramgarh Fort

1. Benares is also known for its intoxicating 'Bhaang'.
2. There has been a lot written and explored on about the Aghori Babas ( sadhus who eat human bones and flesh left after the cremations). This much elusive topic has caught the interest of many, but its wise to use your discretion while discussing this with someone in Varanasi.
